Arhat (Sanskrit) or Arahant (Pali) signified a spiritual practitioner who had “laid down the burden”, realising the goal of nirvana, the culmination of the spiritual life. Such a person, having removed all causes for future becoming, will not be reborn in the cycle of reincarnation of sentient beings.
